Things You Don’t Know About Wrinkles

Most people think aging is the main cause of wrinkles, but in reality it plays a very minor role. Sunlight however, has a profound effect on the skin that causes premature skin aging and a myriad of changes from its original structure.

While aging is an inevitable process, many don’t understand the factors behind the arrival of those lines and crinkles. But you don’t have to end up with a prune-like complexion. Here are some information you might want to know in combating creases.

1. Blame it on the sun….and Earth

Most people think aging is the main cause of wrinkles, but in reality it plays a very minor role. Sunlight however, has a profound effect on the skin that causes premature skin aging and a myriad of changes from its original structure. Your skin will probably thank you if you apply generous amounts of sunscreen in or outdoors. Studies found out that protected skin has lesser mutations that skin exposed to the sun. Protecting your skin may even actually reverse some of the damage.

Another factor is gravity. It just pulls everything downward. Eyebrows and the corners of the lip are the first to come down.

2. It’s not all in the genes.

Susceptibility to sun damage may vary according to skin type. However it is YOUR lifestyle choices that have greater effects. Smoking for example readily damages collagen that speeds up wrinkling.

3. Sugar may not be too sweet.

Sugar attaches to proteins in the bloodstream and form harmful advanced glycation end products (AGEs). As these accumulate, they damage neighbouring proteins such as collagen and elastin that keeps skin firm and elastic and subsequently causing wrinkles and sagging.

4. Switch from coffee to cocoa.

Recent findings show that cocoa contains high levels of epicatchin and catechin—flavonols that protect skin from sun damage and improve circulation to skin cells.

5. Skin massage CAN’T smooth away your wrinkles.

Massaging the skin is no more effective at getting rid of wrinkles than massaging the scalp is at causing hair to grow. The idea of hard scrubbing is no different. Wrinkles are caused by damage below, not on the top.

6. Don’t over-exaggerate.

Redundant huh? But literally, too much muscle action on the face can lead to noticeable increase of facial lines. Furthermore, don’t attempt to over wash your face as water strips the skin off its natural protection. Use moisturizer as often as necessary. They work by locking up moisture on the surface of the skin and can temporarily improve the appearance of wrinkles by plumping it up. Drinking liberal amount of water may help in hydrating, but not plumping the skin. Our kidneys closely regulate water intake. You will simply end up going to the bathroom more often.

7. Sleep on your back.

Sleeping on your sides can lead you to acquiring lines and creases on the side you’re snoozing. In time, those sleep lines that you see the moment you wake up can further develop into wrinkles.

8. Do the drugs and diet.

Antioxidants like vitamin A, C & E neutralize free radicals that cause collagen breakdown. They are found naturally in food such as blueberries, nuts, green veggies, and green tea, or may be available as oral and topical applications.

9. When it bothers you…

You may purchase some over-the-counter wrinkle creams. Or visit you dermatologist to know what best suits your skin type. They may improve the appearance of lines, but there’s no assurance that everything will completely go away.

10. Fine-tune your facial expressions.

Self-explanatory. Frequent frowning is simply dreadful.
